Kenya is renown worldwide to be home to the safari. The late eighteenth and nineteenth century saw European royalty and American presidents visit Kenya quite regularly where they used to spend their time on hunting safaris. It was not up until recently, in the 1950’s & 1960’s that the photographic safari became a cult, especially with the release of the book and film, Born Free which is almost single handily responsible for generating the initial excitement surrounding the new phenomenon.
There have also been countless documentaries made about a number of Kenya’s National Parks including the Masai Mara, Amboseli and Lake Nakuru which suggests why most people’s first encounter with an African safari is through a variety of Kenya safaris. Although this seems to be a common trend, the effect has reduced considerably in recent years as the internet has helped convey information about other countries offering safaris, giving even first-timers the ability to make informed decisions.
Kenya is not just a tourist destination for first time safari goers but a destination for those looking for a combination safari. Safari packages to Kenya regularly include the option to combine a trip with a variety of Tanzania safaris. In almost all cases the pristine white beaches of Kenya is only a maximum of a two hour flight on a light aircraft from any National Park in the country. Combination beach options for Botswana safari tours and other centrally located African nations are very limited due to their proximity from a tropical beach, and usually mean several flights which can take at least one day off your holiday if not more, relocating.
Highlights of a Kenya safari include the awe-inspiring Masai Mara migration between the months of July-October. Although the Masai Mara is a relatively small reserve of 1500sq km it adjoins the much larger Serengeti National Park which is 15000sq km and is separated by the Mara River. Although the Masai Mara is a relatively small part of a larger ecosystem it’s popular for a number of reasons. The wildebeest migration, it’s in relatively close proximity to Nairobi International Airport and it’s an exceptionally scenic region of the country.
One underlying factor that makes Kenya so popular with tourists is because Nairobi is the hub of East Africa and is easy to get to from almost anywhere in the world. Other destinations in Africa including Tanzania, Namibia & Botswana are much more difficult to get to from outside of the continent.
