The Dominance of the Internet in News Dissemination

Behind the Citizen Journalism Revolution

The latest calamities that heavily damaged a few Indian Ocean countries, the Philippines, Vietnam, China and some others have validated unquestionably what the Internet can achieve in making the world know of important developments. Albeit there are television stations and channels organized worldwide that announce news to the various nations of the world, on the more individual side the Internet is more useful and in depth. It can reveal the scene of damage, the lonely misfortunes and the bravery of some in methods that conventional news structures are incapable of, or at least are not set to.

Take for instance the floods that surged in the cities and nearby municipalities of Manila, Philippines. With the Internet, affected Internet-familiar users sent out emergency information of any locations with pictures and short videotapes, petitions for fast and more additional aid, and improvisations people perform to deal with or react to the urgent situations they must cope with. A lot of these short videos or digital snapshots were forwarded electronically —read via the Internet— to news and television channels organizing relief or aid action. The sent requests were in turn dispatched to those heading the operations resulting in many people being picked up just in the nick of time.

In using the Internet, the persons applied the more well-known social media sites, placing the photos and videos in their own electronic addresses and those of the broadcast networks. Thus the electronic photos were at once received by many of those intended recipients, and, in the example of the networks, announced quickly. The public was advised of the happenings just a little time after these events took place and hence many were aware how severe the misfortune was. One of the end-results were great responses from other people and even those who were distressed, if just lightly, by the floods. Overseas Filipinos from all countries also responded, often unidentified.

This event and similar ones that took place recently are only examples on how the Internet news styles and designs modified and are changing the world and societies in general. Its breach of the once called ‘Bamboo Curtain’ —or Communist China— allowed the citizens of that country to witness what is occurring in the everywhere else so that, historians say, it swayed the leaders to create some restricted private enterprise there, in addition to Hong Kong. These days millions of mainland Chinese (as differentiated fromoverseas Chinese), essentially the teen-agers, are familiar with the Internet and vastly onto the occurrences in the world.

The conception of the Internet can be deemed one of the best and fundamental occurrences that affected the world, on a level with the creation of the wheel, counting and probably the telephone. This is because the Internet facilitated on the spot world exchange of ideas for everybody without much spending and trouble. The dissemination of personal information is at present more rapid and more comprehensive via the social sites –Web2.0— besides the first versions electronic mail systems or Web 1.0. The same can be stated about sales, called Internet marketing, done by Internet habitués.

At any rate, the Internet has transformed the manner people interact with others in society. It has brought people closer, if not physically at least almost, setting off with news about each other.
