San Antonio, Texas – According to authorities, a man was charged with murder Tuesday after he told police that he stabbed a friend to death in an apartment on the Northwest Side.
The victim, a man in his late 50s, was found by police around 4 a.m. after they forced their way into his residence at the Timbermill Apartments in the 12300 block of Blanco Road. He was slumped in a chair with multiple stab wounds, police said. Authorities declined to name him. According to police, 26-year old, Antonio Moreno, admitted to the killing after he showed up at a gas station on Bitters Road nearU.S. 281, holding a knife, with blood on his hands and clothes.
SAPD Capt. Cris Andersen said that a clerk handed Moreno a beer and alerted police. According to a police incident report, Moreno had called police on his cell phone from the corner of Blanco Road and West Avenue at 11:30 p.m. Monday and told them he had just killed somebody, but by the time police arrived he was gone. When police finally caught up with him at the gas station 30 minutes later he told officers he was down on his luck, just out of rehab and that he may have killed his best friend, police said.
Moreno, who appeared intoxicated or possibly on drugs, was placed in the back of a patrol car, where he provided officers with a series of obscure tips about the victim’s whereabouts, eventually telling them his victim was located near a shopping cart and some tennis courts, Andersen said. Police found the victim after several hours of searching for a location that matched the description, according to Andersen.
SAPD spokesman Sgt. Chris Benavides said Moreno had “blood evidence on his hands.” He said officers recovered a lock-blade knife but had not confirmed it was the murder weapon. There were signs of a struggle at the apartment, but a motive for the killing was not known, Benavides said. In August of 2008, records show that Moreno was arrested and charged with assault with bodily injury. He was sentenced to 20 days in jail with a $600 fine. Now, he was in Bexar County Jail, his bond set at $100,000.
