Lake Michigan At Risk From Kalamazoo River Oil Leak

In Southwest Michigan, a state of emergency has been announced in response to the Kalamazoo River oil leak. On Monday morning, a leak in a large pipe sent almost 20,000 barrels of oil to the river. The oil slick is proving difficult to control, though the EPA and Enbridge Energy are working to control it. The oil spill of the Kalamazoo River

The pipeline was shut down relatively quickly, but the reason for the leak isn’t really known. The pipeline operator is estimating that there were 800,000 or more gallons of oil dumped into the river. The oil slick is quickly moving the 60 miles between the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michigan. Residents are already reporting heavy fumes and oil-coated wildlife along the waterways.

Restitution from Enbridge Energy promised

As outlined by spokespeople for Enbridge Energy, the business will “do all it can to minimize the spill’s impact on communities.” The 30-inch pipeline was used to carry crude oil from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario. Governor Jennifer Granholm, among others, has questioned dedication to the clean-up. Enbridge has estimated the spill was 819,000 gallons of oil – experts say it might be over 1 million gallons. The cleanup will probably cost in the range of various hundred million dollars .

Will the spill need the EPA’s help

The EPA has been asked to come help clean up the Kalamazoo River oil spill. There are significant concerns about the Kalamazoo River Superfund cleanup site. PCBs found within the cleanup site could interact with the gasoline fumes. Toxic fumes could possibly be created by this combination. The EPA is certain to have some kind of involvement, either financial or regulatory, within the cleanup.
